Please help a student out: What would your ultimate furniture manufacturer provide online??
Thanks in advance for your help. I am doing a web design project, focusing on a b2b site for a furniture manufacturer. So, if you're an interior designer, or you are a buyer for a furniture store, I would very much appreciate some of your thoughts!
What is important to you and your business that you'd want to see reflected in the site? When you're choosing furniture, how you do you want to search or sort? By room? By type of furniture item? Or something else, like finish, or era, or style? (I've taken a look at the Decorati search - is that optimal?) Would you want tools to help you share information or images with your clients or customers or staff? Do you like to browse through pictures or search for something specific?
What else would this site have to make it your dream resource for finding great furniture?

Good luck with your project. For me the MOST important aspect is that they provide maximum protection for those of us who are honestly in the trade and are bearing all of the risk of having a storefront etc. That said, I like to search by category and then by style. I want all construction details, sizes (inside and outside), COM yardage requirements, cushion options and any customization options that they offer. I prefer line drawings in black and white so that clients don't have to get past the floral velvet to see the frame. Being able to rotate the piece to see all sides would be wonderful.
Being able to quickly and easily order fabric or finish samples is a must and we can't wait a month to get them.
I need to be able to email the pictures directly to clients and be assured that only size information will travel with it... no brand name, web site etc.

Your questions are very interesting! We have spent a lot of time thinking through all the ways people want to search furniture online, and we are constantly adding new variables. For example, we just relaunched our textile search to include new textile-specific sub-categories. I'd say designing a search is more an art than science, and you just have to keep improving it over time as you acquire more data to search by.
One thing I'd like to mention - if this manufacturer is on Decorati, then you can easily login and grab customized code for an "affiliate button" that you can add to the manufacturer web site that will direct traffic to that manufacturer's homepage on Decorati. The benefit is then you can use our product search and can skip building your own.
