This Edwardian house in San Francisco had been owned by a large family, who lived very casually. They had made the house very warm and comfortable, filled with lots of children and dogs and everything that goes with them. I wanted to reign in that exuberance and focus instead on the beautiful architectural details, returning the house to a more formal atmosphere in keeping with its history. The red dining room and the green living room became black and white, and all of a sudden the beautiful bones of the house sprang forward. I continued that restrained palette throughout the house, with nuanced variations.
