A classic Chinese allover fretwork design repeats with consummate precision and finesse across the mauve cocoa ground of this classically elegant antique Khotan. The meander motif is reconfigured as a longitudinal design for the border, but now on black, in a beautiful complementary contrast to the mauve cocoa field. The rug is simultaneously complex and yet so simple. What is most striking is the fact that entire design is made up of only one motif and three colors. Early twentieth century.
