Antique Amritsar from North India, late nineteenth century. Rarely do Indian or Persian antique rugs of the late nineteenth century approach the particular detail and style of the great masterpieces from the Mughal and Safavid periods that inspired them. This stunning Amritsar is an exception. Grand palmettes with complex articulation and interior detail hover toward the four corners of the field, linked by elaborate strapwork arabesque tendrils which have additional vinescroll designs within their contours, in keeping with the great classical forerunners. The border of palmettes is relatively open and spare, nicely balancing the rich complexity of the field. But despite the fidelity to classical design, the palette is remarkably modern and subdued, in lovely tones of cocoa, gold, and pale apricot.
