Antique Bakshaish, Persia, late nineteenth century. A boldly graphic stepped medallion in pale blue floats amidst an ivory field strewn with stylized linear shrubs and flowers on this extraordinary antique Bakshaish. An inner ivory medallion with long finials is flanked by two writhing figures in pale gold, which probably represent dragons in abstract form. Equally abstract is the stunning double vinescroll or figure-eight border with large rosettes and serrated leaves set against the same pale blue of the main medallion. This masterpiece represents Bakshaish weaving at its best.
