Antique Oushak, Turkey, circa 1900 - At first glance, this striking antique Oushak appears to have an allover design. A closer look reveals the delicate linear outline of a star medallion derived from the classical Turkish Ushak carpets of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Stylized floral sprays fill the areas above and below the medallion, continuing its design texture across the sandy field. A stylized arabesque vinescroll is set boldly against a persimmon ground, providing a monumental contrast to the delicacy and linearity of the field.
