Antique Tabriz, Persia, late nineteenth century - The compartment format on this elegant antique Tabriz comes from classical Northwest Persian garden carpets. Each square contains a different scene of paradise, with stylized trees and shrubs, some of which are inhabited by deer, peacocks, and various birds. A delicate arabesque vinescroll border encloses this lush imagery, but preserving the coloration of the filed to establish a larger decorative unity.
