Antique Kerman, Persia, late nineteenth century:
Antique Kermans are among the most elegant and refined Persian carpets. Prized for their fidelity to the great masterpieces of the Safavid era some three hundred years earlier, Kermans tend to render classic designs with the utmost precision in drawing and finesse in weaving technique. This masterful example has a grand medallion design in champagne and tan filled with lush and miniscule arabesque detail, while utilizing bold framing outlines or borders to add an almost architectural power and formality. The cornerpieces echo the design of the medallion, with only a narrow soft blue field in between. The vinescroll borders are much smaller in scale, nicely contrasting the monumentality of the field, but uniting itself with the cornerpieces through the use of similar coloration so as to create a larger framework appropriate for the grand central medallion.
