From the port of Canton, highly prized pieces
of Chinese export lacquer furniture found their way to western Europe
in the holds of the great sailing ships of the East India Trading Company.
Lacquered furniture like this fine reproduction pedestal table
were vigorously pursued by the English aristocracy
during the 18th and early 19th centuries.
The top with its pictorial representation of Chinese life
is subtly rendered in chinoiserie decoration with tones of gold and silver.
The top is supported by an octagonal standard
that is lavishly decorated with exotic floral sprays.
The whole is raised on a platform fitted with
carved parcel gilt ball and paw feet.
