Jean de Merry opened its Los Angeles showroom in 2000, but the roots of our company began hundreds of years before as part of a family passion for leather. During the last several centuries, our families were involved in every level of the leather business, from raising sheep on the remote “Causse Noire,” to the tanning of hides in Millau, the French city that gave some of the most talented leather craftsmen to America in the 19th century.
Upon opening our flagship Los Angeles showroom, and now with representation worldwide, Jean de Merry delved into old family secrets to recreate the process of aging raw hide in order to hand-craft club chairs that look and feel like family heirlooms. The result is our exclusive line of club chairs, hand-dyed and hand-aged as they were in a wonderful bygone era, when quality was the only signature of a great craftsperson.
To compliment our line of chairs, Jean de Merry also manufactures lighting, offering fixtures from a simple, elegant bronze wall sconce, (The Classico), to an elaborate, silver-plated chandelier (The Evasion). And, in answer to the desires of an exclusive clientele, we began manufacturing custom antiqued mirrored credenzas, vanities and consoles, such as The Diana and The Parigi, which have become staples of our line. It has also offered us wonderful opportunities to work with unique materials that have become signature pieces for Jean de Merry. Included, are our exquisite pieces in parchment and shagreen, such as our Jacky Chair or Alba Nesting Tables. Additionally, in recent years, custom and made-to-order design has become a great portion of our business in our desire to meet the very specific needs of our clients.
Our pieces are meant to evoke a taste of modern design in traditional spaces as much as they provide timelessness to the contemporary. We continue to grow with new and exciting pieces, but as ever, “quality” is our only motto for every piece.
